Testing Recap: As did most other contenders for this weekend’s race, Quin participated in the ARCA test at Daytona in January to learn the ropes of superspeedway racing. Prior to the test, Quin had never been on a track larger than the .686-mile layout at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. The test was successful on all accounts and every piece of data was analyzed and taken into consideration in making adjustments and tweaks to the racecar. Quin was also able to tweak and adjust his mindset to the experience of making his first laps in a high-speed drafting pack of cars.
Winning Leadership: Veteran crew chief and multi-time Daytona race winner Kevin Reed will be leading the charge of the Mason Mitchell Motorsports team in this weekend’s event, including Quin’s No. 98 team. The No. 98 car won the last restrictor plate race the team ran at Talladega last year with Gus Dean behind the wheel. Kevin is one of few crew chiefs to repeat as a winner at Daytona, winning twice with John Wes Townley in 2013 and 2016. This weekend, they will make an attempt to replicate those results with Reed calling the shots for Houff.
Beatin’ Cancer: Even if Quin finishes last in Sunday’s race, he’s already a winner. A few years ago, Quin’s mother was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and local doctors were not able to treat her to the family’s satisfaction. After consulting the team at Duke Cancer Institute, his mother underwent aggressive treatments that currently have her cancer free. As a gesture of thanks to DCI, Quin has donated 50% of his race winnings since that time to the organization and Daytona will be no exception. Quin’s paint scheme for this race is not only in support of his Beatin’ Cancer With Duke campaign, but also honors his late grandmother who recently lost her long-term battle with cancer in the off-season.
Quin’s Thoughts: “Honestly, I’m just staying as focused and calm as I can. I feel very prepared mentally and physically, now it’s just about getting down there and performing. Duke is super excited, I know they are all ready to see that thing on the track.
“The guys at Mason Mitchell’s have helped a lot, whether from the test itself or just talking to them. I’m acting like a sponge and absorbing as much as I can througout this entire experience. I’m super excited to get down there and learn more for the race. I’ve been sure to stay in the best physical and mental shape I can be in to drive the car to the absolute best of my abilities. The hard work from the team’s preparation and my own personal preparation will show in Daytona, I just know it!”
