CONCORD, NC (Aug. 29, 2016) – After leading laps early in Saturday night’s Lead 2 Real Estate 200 at Concord Speedway, Quin Houff brought the No. 17 BeatinCancerWithDuke.org Chevrolet home in third, his third top-five finish in seven starts and sixth top-ten in the CARS Tour this season. With the performance, he vaulted to third in the series standings with three races remaining.
After finishing in the top five in Concord last season, Houff and the No. 17 crew brought a brand new car to this most recent CARS Tour event. Their previous chassis was destroyed in a crash at Orange County Speedway four weeks ago and unable to be rebuilt for competition. Following two days of testing and practice, Houff positioned himself to maximize his qualifying effort after ranking in the top five during each practice. However, qualifying was rained out and the field was set off of points, placing him fourth in the lineup.
On the opening circuit, Quin quickly moved his way to the runner-up spot using the outside lane to his benefit. A half-dozen laps later, Houff stole the lead in turn two and led until the lap 25 competition caution, a move from the series which was prompted by the earlier weather. During the scheduled slowdown, Houff and the other front-runners stayed on-track and chose to make no adjustments to their machines. Houff relinquished the top spot on the restart and rode in the second position for the large majority of the final laps until he was muscled back to third by another competitor with less than ten laps to go.
“We were very happy with the first showing of our new car,” Houff said after the race. “We hit the track fast and made only minor changes to get it to my liking. I thought we ran a smart race, but we lost the handle a little bit near the end we couldn’t close the deal. Still, it was a very much needed top three finish.”
Houff, a Kulwicki Driver Development Project member, currently sits 24 markers out of the CARS Super Late Model Tour point lead. His lone win on the CARS Tour this season came in April during the season opener at Southern National Motorsports Park where the series races this coming Saturday night.
